  BE...

I met a friend to plan an event and we went to lunch afterwards. It was a great planning session. As we were leaving the building where we held our meeting, I walked out in front of her. I had the door open and released it as she followed behind me. I didn’t think much of this until I heard a “umph!”

I met a friend to plan an event and we went to lunch afterwards.  It was a great planning session.  As we were leaving the building where we held our meeting, I walked out in front of her.  I had the door open and released it as she followed behind me.  I didn’t think much of this until I heard a “umph!” behind me and I turned to see the door smack my friend in the face.   She laughed and passed it off as an accident.  It was no accident.  It was simple rudeness on my part.  Later, as we left the restaurant I did the same thing.  I barged through the door and turned just in time to see my friend open the door for someone else.  That was when I really looked inside myself to think “do I always barge through life without paying attention to what destruction lies behind me?”  And so, this week prior to Thanksgiving, I am looking inward and hoping to BEcome a better person.  Thanksgiving is about being Thankful for all the bounty we have been given over the past year.  This year we’ve worked harder than ever, and in many cases our bounty may seem less than fruitful.   It is just this time of uncertainty when we can do certain things that will yield a great harvest.  We canwork harder at BEing a better boss, co-worker, client, consultant or volunteer.

BE  Courteous
I will be courteous.  I will open doors for others. I will smile when I see someone on the street. I will ask strangers if they need help carrying bulky items.  I will look people in the eye when they speak. I will listen.  I will say please and thank you.  I will let someone in during road construction instead pretending not to see them inching their way toward my lane. I will tell co-workers, clients, and volunteers what a great job they do.

Be Happy
I will be happy for what I have and happy for my passion to work hard for more.  I will embrace new ideas with fervor.  I will not shy away from new experiences.  I will be open minded which will lead to open doors.  I will walk through doors that I may have closed.  I will rejoice in client satisfaction.  I will happily open doors for others.

Be Above the Fray
I will be honest and work with integrity.  I will keep open communication in my family and work life. I will avoid petty conversations.  I will stop myself from spreading rumors and negativity.  I will work hard to be tackle issues not create them.  I will stand tall so I can look ahead and stay above the politics at work.

Be Nice
    I will be nice(r). Period.

Be Thankful
I will be thankful for all those who touch my life.  I will love the insanity of Thanksgiving dinner.  I will be thankful that I miss my colleagues as we have a day off work to BE Thankful.  I will thank those who open doors for me.
