“FOUR!” Reasons To Stay Competitive and Win!

The Masters just wrapped up another year. The music, ambiance and pure magical thrill that is brought to the game of golf each year consistently amazes me. I had the opportunity to golf with a daughter and two sons this weekend as well. The sun was shining, wind a bit brisk, and the greens ran fast. It was a picture perfect day. And the # 1 reason I enjoyed the day was because everyone was nice. We are a very competitive family in all we do.

Yet on this day, on this course, we were cordial, respectful, yet still played to win.  Business competition can get nasty.  We can easily become so competitive that we become rude and obstinate. We can become poor sports, and that is no way to win!

So here are “FOUR” ways we can continue to be competitive yet keep the white hat firmly placed upon our head.

1) Enjoy Yourself.   When you feel happy you smile more and stress is lessened.  During competition we can become bogged down with the “win” and ignore the “ride to get there.” Relax and enjoy the ride!
2) Stay Calm. Even when you are facing stiff competition the more relaxed you are the stronger you seem to the competition.  Nothing ruffles you, you stay calm and collected and you don’t lose your cool.  Your competitor won’t like that one little bit.
3) Be Polite. You can be competitive and polite at the same time.  Remembering manners when the going gets heated can get you through tough times. We see reality shows daily that bombard us with people who love to display poor manners. You can be honest without being mean or impolite. You’ll feel better about yourself too!
4) Step Back.  A golfer will step back to gauge how she will prepare for the next shot.  This time to take a second look will help ensure a more focused approach to winning.  The best golfers will take their time and take another look to help solidify their decision.

These are only “FOUR” ideas to help us stay competitive and be thought of as a company that others want to emulate and do business with.  Why would we want to WIN if we only could do so with  mean - spirited competitive tactics?  What is the fun in that?!  There’s a golf event in Michigan called the Positively Warren Golf Classic. It’s named in memory of one of the most resected sports anchors in the business, Warren Reynolds.  I had the pleasure of working with him when I was a news producer.  He always enjoyed himself, he was polite to everyone, he was calm in the tightest of timelines. I never saw him crack under the pressure of a “timed” broadcast and he took the time to step back to review his work so he could improve.  He blew away the competition.   If you love to golf, check out www.PositivelyWarren.org!  It’s positively the most fun and “nice” golf classic in Michigan!
